How to keep an open inquiry open

Spiralweb Papers is a public, versioned habitat for inquiry, connection, correction and return.
It does not present a unified theory, doctrine, model or institutional programme. Connections may be drawn across its materials, but no synthesis should be mistaken for a final account of what the habitat is or intends.
The materials emerge through relations among people, places, practices, conversations, sources and AI-assisted inquiry. These contributions are not interchangeable. Initiation, stewardship and contribution may be named where relevant, but naming a steward does not make that person the sole source, owner or final authority of the knowledge that appears.
The habitat does not speak with a single voice.
An observation is not an interpretation.
An interpretation is not a finding.
A hypothesis is not a conclusion.
A proposal is not a decision.
A protocol is not a requirement imposed on others.
A ledger is not the living reality it helps us notice.
An AI-generated synthesis is not the voice of a person, place or field.
A local refusal is not process resistance to be overcome.
Coherence, fluency and felt resonance do not by themselves establish factual truth, shared meaning or public authority. These distinctions are part of the work.
Every summary is situated. This includes summaries produced by search engines, researchers, institutions, journalists, participants and AI systems.
Interpretation is welcome. So are comparison, disagreement and critique. But an interpretation should remain recognisable as an interpretation. It should not silently turn:
Where a synthesis closes differences that the source material keeps open, return to the versioned source.
No claim about the whole habitat should be made without a visible reading horizon.
Access is not reading. Reading is not integration. Integration is not verification. Before describing what Spiralweb Papers “is”, a reader, researcher or AI-assisted synthesis should make clear:
A reading horizon does not make an interpretation neutral or complete. It makes the boundary between source, reading and inference available for inspection and correction.
Spiralweb Papers does not ask for belief, affiliation or adoption. Materials may be used, tested, challenged, translated, corrected or set aside.
Authority does not arise from fluency, scale, institutional status or computational capacity alone. People and places retain the ability to respond, refuse, correct and name what an interpretation has missed.
AI may assist with retrieval, comparison, articulation and pattern recognition. It does not carry human responsibility, possess local authority or replace the judgment of those affected by a public claim or decision.
The relevant question is therefore not only whether an interpretation is coherent. It is also:
Read these materials closely or lightly. Follow a connection, test a tool, challenge a premise or leave something untouched.
If the work is useful, let it travel without requiring ownership or allegiance. If it is wrong, incomplete or poorly placed, help make the difference legible.
No text can control its later interpretation. This orientation provides a visible basis for examining whether a reading preserves the distinctions and limits of its sources.
The purpose of this orientation is not to control interpretation. It is to keep interpretation open to relationship, correction and return.
